Nothing is Okay

Writer's picture: Lauren MitchellLauren Mitchell

... but my flowers aren't really rattled. they don't seem to understand what is going on, or maybe they actually remember who is in charge better than me.

Nothing is really okay right now, but actually, that’s the point.

Right now we are in a season where we know change is coming...hello election.

A lot of the time, we don’t see it coming at all…hello Corona.

We don’t always see it so clearly, but everything about this world is broken. Nothing is actually okay, it’s not going to get better. That is what sin did.

I know, I know, that is a lot of truth for the first lines of a post on a Wednesday night.

I’ve just finished reading Revelation and one of the things that I loved the most was the picture painted by Chapter 5. We enter heaven and encounter a scroll that is written on the inside and the outside and sealed with seven seals. No one in heaven or on earth was found worthy to open the scroll and break the seals. Then, everyone rejoices as the Lion of Judah enters, he “has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and it’s seven seals”.

My commentary gave me the best added details for this scene. You see, if we were Hebrew, we would know that in Jewish culture the only scrolls that were written on the inside and outside and sealed with seven seals were title deeds. If a person had lost ownership of a title, it was written on the back and sealed seven times to symbolize seven years. During this time, the title could be bought back. The scroll we see in Revelation is the title to earth, we lost it because we couldn't pay for the sin we let in, but Jesus bought it back when He conquered sin and death. He is the only one worthy to open the scroll and redeem the earth we lost.

We, the bride of Christ, wait for Jesus to come and reclaim earth. The way 2020 has gone, most of us are more excited about this event with each passing day. Until then, we remain in a broken world. We are constantly placing our hope in man to make things better, but no man can bring unity (among racial tension), or healing (of viruses), or any lasting change because all of that actually happens in the human heart. Only Jesus deals in hearts.

In this election year, I think a lot of us are looking for more than a president, but the only choice before us is two very human men. Both are flawed. God has used a lot of leaders that were way less than perfect to lead countries because that is all He had to work with…humans. When we look for our political leaders to fix the human heart, we will always be disappointed. No leader will ever fix all the problems on earth, no president will turn our country completely around, only Jesus works on that kind of individual level. One day, He will come back with that scroll and redeem the earth. That is where I have to keep placing my hope, continually, over and over, again and again.

I love our country, not always what it is becoming, but for the beliefs it was founded on. We are a country made up of humans, we are all broken and as a result, civilization is broken as well. Those of us who carry the Holy Spirit represent the kingdom God is building behind the scenes. It’s been comforting for me to remember that although I am proudly an American citizen, my real citizenship lies in heaven.

WARNING: POITICAL OPINION COMING…IF YOU DON’T WANT IT STOP READING HERE.

I think President Trump has made excellent decisions as the leader of our country. He may have a gruff and not very politically correct way of handling things, but I think that tough skin is the only way he has been able to handle the job. If you dig in and do some research, real research, because the media in this country has become something unimaginably biased, you will find some great things that he has done to stop human trafficking and help its victims, to end late term abortion, and to provide thousands of jobs, specifically for minorities. He has secured excellent trade policies that are making us less dependent on other countries, and he has made some amazing headway for peace in the middle east with, most recently, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Granted he doesn’t need his salary as President, he is required to be compensated by law, so he keeps $1 of his salary and donates the rest. He seems to genuinely love our country enough to do the hard work of being criticized at every turn.

Because you love this country, I want you to make an informed vote. It matters. At the same time, I want you to hold in your mind that Jesus bought back earth, He holds the deed. God is not moved from His throne, not even for a minute no matter who wins this election, His hand is in it. He remains in charge of every single one of our days.
