Connection Isn't Overated

I hear people say, “ I wish God would just give me the answer.”, or “ I wish I could just hear from God!”

Communication is really underrated. Having a daughter at college reminds me of the need for frequent conversation. She feels far away, but the ability to talk or facetime anytime makes everything so much better. I was reminded this week that clear conversation is just as important and frequent. I don’t know what you may remember about dorm rooms, but the service isn’t the best. It gets frustrating trying to connect when I can’t hear her well. While just staring at her is comforting, I really like hearing her voice.

Maintaining our relationship with God isn’t very different. Frequency is important, but so is clarity. I need to be able to hear Him.

At the risk of you thinking I am a little crazy, (Let’s be real, if you are still here, you already know that) I will tell you that I do hear from God. He talks to me in a variety of ways, but it is tailored to my heart, and I know it’s Him. When I feel like God is far or I can’t hear Him. If I am not getting clear direction, do you know who moved? Experience has taught me, it wasn’t Him.

Sin clouds our connection with God. It clutters our hearts and takes up space that was meant for better things. It twists the truth so we don’t know which way we are going, and we can’t see or hear clearly to walk with God in obedience when sin is clouding our connection.

This is why it’s important to ask God to search our hearts like David did in Psalm 139. We need God to test our hearts and then lead us in the way everlasting. We need to let God in to shine light in every area of our lives.

Excerpt from my devotional Steadfast Through Psalms:

In his psalms, David speaks of being found innocent ant being true. He speaks of his righteousness and upright heart. How could he say these things? David was not a man without sin; he knew that. He had sins that we might be tempted to label as “Big Sins,” How was he comfortable saying some of the things he said?

David could say these things because he kept in fellowship with god. They had an intimate relationship. He did not let time pass without God searching his heart. Every part of his heart was exposed to God. We so often want to keep our sin in a box, like it’s somehow separate from us and God doesn’t even know it’s there. God already paid for all of our sins, so we are forgiven, but we have to acknowledge the elephant in the room and ask for that forgiveness to restore relationship. Once we have it out there, God can help us on the road to repentance.

Open communication in the form of frequent prayers and repentance keeps us in step with God. We fall into trouble when we stray from that dependence, and equally when we forget about repentance. This keeps us both confident and humble.

We can’t take a break from confession. If we do our connection gets fuzzy. I like to use Lenten season as a way to fine tune my connection. I am putting together simple daily prayers to use as a way to be closer to God, to hear Him more. They aren’t fluffy prayers; they are invitations to search our hearts for sin anywhere it might be hiding out.

I want to be like David. I want to feel secure in my forgiveness, and remember I am innocent because of Jesus. Part of that is acknowledging my sin before God and recognizing and receiving His forgiveness.

If there is anything our enemy doesn’t want. It’s open communication between God and His kids. He wants to distort God’s voice and the reception on our end. He wants us confused and stuck in our sins, feeling powerless and guilty.

I’m inviting you to beat your enemy, and to clear up connection to hear from God.
